Life can be incredibly challenging, especially when you're grappling with grief and anger. I've discovered a powerful tool to help navigate these difficult emotions: joy.
Now, I'm not referring to a superficial, fleeting happiness where everything seems perfect. True joy is deeper. It comes from recognizing that despite life's hardships, love and light still surround us. Even in the midst of grieving a significant loss, there are people who care deeply about you and wish to support you. Beauty and kindness exist all around us—we just need to notice them.
Consider the simple pleasures:
Soaking in the sunshine
Catching sight of a rainbow
Receiving a smile from a stranger on the street
Hearing a favorite song at just the right moment
Getting an unexpected call from someone who loves you deeply
By acknowledging and giving thanks for these small blessings, we build resilience in our souls, preparing us for whatever life throws our way.
I understand the temptation to shut out the world during tough times. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and retreat, hiding from everyone who cares about you until the pain subsides. Sometimes, I even feel guilty about experiencing joy after a loss. "Why should I feel joy when they aren't here?" "Is it right to feel this way when I'm grieving so deeply?"
But genuine joy does exist! Even though it's tough to regain your footing after a setback, we can learn to move forward with a focus on the positive.
Focus on Love When guilt about feeling joyful creeps in, I remind myself of the love showered upon me by family and friends who want nothing but happiness for me. This helps me remember that there are people rooting for my success and joy.
Mind Your Self-Talk We often fall into a spiral of negative self-talk when we make mistakes or feel low. But why be so harsh on ourselves? Instead of berating myself, I now say, "How human of me!" Mistakes and bad days are part of being human, and it's okay to acknowledge them without judgment.
